Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about book distribution

What's the difference between distribution and publishing?
Publishing involves creating the book (editing, design, formatting), while distribution is about getting the finished book to retailers and readers. We handle the distribution side—getting your already-published book into stores, libraries, and online platforms worldwide. If you need publishing services too, we offer those separately.
How long does it take to get my book distributed?
Your book will be live on Amazon and other major online retailers within 5-7 business days. Physical distribution to bookstores and libraries takes 2-3 weeks as the book needs to appear in wholesale catalogs. International distribution can take 4-6 weeks to fully propagate across all global markets.
Do bookstores automatically stock my book?
Distribution makes your book available for bookstores to order—it doesn't guarantee they'll stock it. Stores order based on customer demand, local author connections, and sales data. However, being in the Ingram catalog means any bookstore can easily order your book for customers, and you can work with local stores to get your book on their shelves through author events and consignment.
What are the ongoing fees after the setup fee?
There are no monthly or annual fees. The setup fee is one-time only. We earn our revenue by taking a small percentage of each sale (typically 10-15% depending on the channel), but you never pay anything else. If your book doesn't sell, you don't pay anything beyond the initial setup fee.
Can I update my book after it's distributed?
Yes! You can update your manuscript, cover, pricing, or metadata anytime. Changes to digital formats (ebooks) propagate within 24-72 hours. Print book changes take effect for new orders immediately, though books already in the system won't be recalled. There's a small fee for major content revisions requiring new ISBN assignment.
What royalty rate will I receive?
Royalty rates vary by format and channel. For ebooks, you typically earn 60-70% of list price on direct sales. For print books, royalties are based on your list price minus printing costs and retailer discount (usually 40-60% of list price after costs). Your dashboard shows exact royalty calculations for each sale. You always keep significantly more than traditional publishing (8-15%).
Do I need my own ISBN or can you provide one?
We include a free ISBN with all distribution packages. However, if you want to be listed as the publisher of record, you can purchase and provide your own ISBN. Using our ISBN means we're listed as the publisher in some databases, though you remain the author and rights holder. Most authors are fine with using our free ISBN to save $125+ per format.
Can I still sell directly on Amazon if I use your service?
Yes, your book will be available on Amazon through our distribution. However, you cannot also separately publish the same ISBN through KDP—it would create a duplicate listing. If you want Amazon exclusivity for KDP Select benefits, our Essential package may not be the right fit. For most authors, the wider distribution outweighs KDP Select benefits.
How do I receive my royalty payments?
Royalties are paid monthly via direct deposit or check, your choice. There's a $25 minimum threshold—if you don't hit it in a given month, royalties roll over to the next month. You can view real-time sales data in your dashboard anytime, and detailed royalty reports are provided with each payment.
What if I want to cancel or move to another distributor?
There's no contract or lock-in period. You can request to remove your book from distribution anytime with 30 days' notice. We'll help facilitate a smooth transition if you choose to move to another distributor. Your setup fee is non-refundable, but you're never obligated to continue distribution with us.
